Alternate Ways to Stay Warm

When most of your city is snowed in, you have extra time.* You might clean your closet. You might work. You might realize your electricity has gone out and you no longer have heat. You might start to get a little cold and then you might remember you can actually do something with your hands other than type. So you might make a fire.

Sure, it's pretty simple but you were never a boy scout, or a girl scout, for that matter, so it takes a while. But you get it going, and your house is warm again.

You read a book. You take a nap. You have silence, but you might not be entirely comfortable with it. Time to think isn't something that you've had a lot of lately. And now it's all you have. Or maybe all you can't ignore.

So you think, but not about anything in particular. You remember warmer places you've been, trying to fool yourself into believing you don't live in Colorado.
You close your eyes and think of warm sand and gentle waves.

Or maybe you make a grocery list and clean the bathroom by candlelight. Cleaning is a good way to stay warm.

Eventually, though, your mind drifts again. Like back to last Sunday afternoon when you were at home, folding laundry, with football on the t.v. and you thought to yourself "this is really nice." Except, when you walked down the hall to put towels in the closet, you told yourself it was sure nice, but something was still missing. Your mind wandered then, as it does now, and you realize there are just some things about you that can't be denied.

And when that get's old, you open a bottle of wine and sit by the fire. Soon the electricity returns and you realize your house has been at a balmy 56 degrees (F) for a few hours. Should have opened the wine sooner.

So you enjoy your wine, watch some mindless television and wander around your house a little. You check your email, chat with your mom and revel in the beauty of a working furnace.

Then, you create a profile on an online dating site because when it comes to finding ways to stay warm, you just never know.

* A LOT of people worked today and had absolutely no extra time to think, muchless stay warm. I appreciate that and I take electricity for granted way too much.

Sounds like a great day, sans cleaning by candlelight. Though, I'm sure that made mom proud.

A blizzard, AND no power? Sounds like a dream come true! All the more reason to warm up a big mug of hot chocolate (on the gas stove, I hope), throw a few extra logs on the fireplace, and curl up with a good book (nothing beats a well-stocked library)!!
I guess we'll see if I still feel that way once I move somewhere that it becomes a REALITY!

I love your blog. I was behind in reading, so I got to read the last 3 posts all at once. You have such amazing insight on life, it blows me away. I can't imagine snow on the ground or in the air. I think once in my life it has snowed here before Halloween - and we're lucky if we get snow a couple of times the entire winter. Funny how unsettled you felt, then did the dating profile. You might be just as unsettled if you had a partner hanging around the house by the fire. Time to yourself is something most people don't get enough of and take for granted. Stay warm!

We definitely take our electricity for granted. A couple of years ago we had a ice storm that left everyone powerless for a week or more. Beleive it or not, we spent most of our time outside because that's where we could build the biggest fires....to stay warm, to cook by & to have some social interaction.
If you build it...they will come.

It's important to understand I have ADHD tendancies... a blizzard is not a dream, in that respect.

Depending on the wine and the book, you may have had a much better time alone than you ever could have on a date...

Congrats on putting yourself out there. Hope you meet some great people.

How about HotCocoa with a dash of Frangelica or Bailey's...warm, sweet & calming!

Fire! Cool! We stayed in the mountains for a work do about 3 years ago and the guys made a fire. I dug it.

Your fire looks like it has antlers in it. But I know that's probably not the case. That'd be a bit "sharman" and there'd be one angry deer outside.

Oh yeah, and we'd all had a bunch to drink and after the fire was lit I had TWO boys snuggle up to me. One in front and one cuddling my back.

I went YESSSS I am Madonna.

But then we fell asleep :(

It fell into the high 70s here over the weekend and I plugged my little retro electric logs with the crackling christmas tinsel flames in..... They will NOT keep you warm, but it's so spirited I just couldn't resist!

Now see, I'd love the time alone...no sounds, no nothing to do but nap (yeah wine sooner might have been a good idea) and snuggle under a blanket. I've found that I can be just as warm, if not warmer snuggled by myself, and usually it's more comfortable!!
