Eighteen miles worth

Yesterday morning, I returned from a very torturous eighteen mile run. It was so hard, I spent the better part of the last half looking for the giant cement blocks tied to my legs a la sleeping with the fishes.

After I spent twenty minutes crying, trying to remember why I'm doing this, I sat on the floor of the shower -I couldn't stand but more so because of the light headedness and less the legs- and tried to think of the people I could call for some sympathy and/or advice.

I have a lot of runner friends and while that's always a great source of inspiration I more wanted to whine than anything. So, I called my sister.

She answered and I went right into my pity party. "Why am I doing this, " I asked?

She didn't know. A few seconds of silence passed and then she said "I know! Get over to Grandma's house now. I just talked to her and she has cinnamon rolls. Go eat some!"

And so I went and ate 18 miles worth of cinnamon rolls and didn't feel one ounce of guilt.

The simplest solutions are often the best.

As someone who as run 18 miles or more on many weekend days I wish I had some sage advice for your bad run. Sorry, sometimes it is hard. I can only advise against complaining too much to non-runners. Definately don't ask them why you do what you do. They will only try to convince you that you are crazy! You already know this!!

I know the pain of 18!

The good news is that if you keep at it and do the work you'll get stronger and stronger. As you get more fit those long runs won't hurt as much - or as long.

Regardless of fitness Grandma's baking always helps!

The firthest I've ever ran was 15 and I was 19. I think I'd cry in the shower if I had to run 5, but cinnamon roles would fix everthing.

Okay, really - you know why you're doing it. I'm sure your little wise grandma had just as much advice for you as she did the cinnamon rolls. They sound tasty - please send some?! Oh, wait - I didn't run 18 yesterday, never mind.

Sounds like with running you have a secret weapon.

Yum Yum! I'm not a runner & I won't try to convince you that you're crazy... in fact, I'd think you were crazy if you didn't go get some of your gramma's rolls!

Ah, yeah, those 18 milers...even worse, the 20-22...it does make you wonder! Homemade cinnamon rolls though are such a good treat!! As for it feeling bad, sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not...at least it was a training run though and not the race.
